Could My Child Have Dyslexia?

This quick checklist can help you notice patterns that may suggest a need for a professional evaluation. It’s not a diagnosis.

Reading & Spelling
1) Struggles to sound out unfamiliar words
2) Reads slowly or avoids reading aloud
3) Frequently guesses words instead of sounding them out
4) Spells the same word differently within the same assignment
5) Has difficulty remembering common sight words (e.g., said, was, they)
Writing
6) Written work is much weaker than spoken ideas
7) Avoids writing tasks or becomes frustrated quickly
8) Has trouble organizing thoughts on paper
Language & Memory
9) Has difficulty remembering letter sounds or matching sounds to letters
10) Struggles to learn rhymes or break words into sounds
11) Has trouble remembering sequences (days of the week, months, steps in directions)
School Experience
12) Works much harder than peers but shows limited progress in reading
13) Has strong reasoning or verbal skills but weak reading/spelling
14) Shows signs of anxiety, low confidence, or avoidance around schoolwork
15) A close family member (parent, sibling, or grandparent) has dyslexia or significant reading difficulties
